Food That Lies #1: Olives

Olives

Look at them. The lying toads.

SO. I like to eat many different foods. The list of foods that I do like to eat is vast and varied. There are however, some foods that I don’t like to eat. This list, when laid out, can be a bit surprising considering the things that I am willing to eat and enjoy.

Sensibly my main issue with nearly all of these foods is the taste. I don’t like the taste. This makes sense.

The other issue I have with some of these foods is that they looks SO TASTY AND APPETISING. So tasty. And yet they are not.

Basically, I don’t like food that looks like it should taste good.

First up? Olives. Now, I like olive oil. Olive oil is great. It’s nice to cook with. It’s nice to dip bread into and eat. It’s nice to drizzle over my vegetables or fish.

Olives though? EUGH. And yet? They look so good, round and shiny and perfect. Even the texture is good (and texture is important with food). I don’t even mind the smell.

However, when I bite into one and the flavour spreads across my tongue? MASSIVE FAIL. And I want to like them so badly.

Morning Parade @ The Scala 26/09/11

Mon 26 Sep – Morning Parade
It was pretty handy that I didn’t have any lectures on Monday, because I discovered on Wednesday that the journey on the train takes a fair amount of time and… I would have missed this gig. Which would have been unfortunate.

VETO were the support band – I had been expecting two for some reason but I was kind of glad that there was only one in the end. They were pretty good – the singer reminds me a bit of a friend of mine, only my friend didn’t have quite such an epic beard.

Morning Parade were aces. Apparently the guy standing behind me has known the singer for TEN YEARS. SINCE THEY WERE THIS TALL. TEN YEARS. YOU KNOW. TEN YEARS.

Yeah. I got the picture after the 5th or 6th time he told me. Mostly that he’d been drinking.

Then after about ten minutes some other guy behind me grabs my shoulders and says “This is your fifth time?”. So I turned round and was BAFFLED by what appeared to be Frank Turner asking me a question, only… Frank’s had a haircut AND he’s on tour in the US. So clearly, this was not Frank Turner. Just some guy. So I told him “no, this is only my third time seeing Morning Parade.” Random.

Incidentally, the first time I saw Morning Parade they were supporting Feeder and Grant Nicholas FORGOT their name. Oops. He was adorable about it though and got the in the end. The second time I saw them… they were also supporting Feeder (do you see a theme here?) and Grant did remember their name.

I’ve got a couple of Morning Parade vinyl singles, but nothing more. I should really sort that out. It’s occurred to me that if the Stereophonics made music that was catchy and danceable and that I liked, they might sound a bit like Morning Parade.

In other news, I’m sure I installed a last.fm plugin into my wordpress blog but it appears to be missing.

it’s clear to see

So. The job is all jacked in. I am registered at my university of choice. My university of choice may or may not have totally forgotten that me and this other guy are doing this particular masters and that’s why no one turned up for the induction lecture on Saturday.

Also, I have no idea when or where my lectures are or when it all starts. :/

Not good really. At least the website seems to slowly be populating with useful information.

At least I get to chill at home all day and not go to work. My hours of optimum productivity are between about 10.30am and 3am, so it’s nice to be able to go to bed about 2.00/2.30am and then wake up around 9ish. It the bit where I’m thinking of stuff to be doing that takes getting used to.

I’ve dyed the back 2/3 of my hair pink though. Which is a start.

I’m sure there was other stuff…but I cannot remember what it was. This is what happens when you start writing a post 2 hours before going away doing something else and coming back to try to finish it. Oops.

Writer’s Block: Blast to the past

If you could travel back in time, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?

Ten year old me was a lot like twenty-seven year old me. Just shorter and about a third of the weight. At least, I don’t remember being too much different personality-wise – perhaps a little shyer, but that got dealt with through experience and hair dye.

I’d tell little me that that band I hear on the radio every once in a blue moon is Ben Folds Five and maybe hand over £15 to buy the album. I’d tell me that HELL YES albums get a lot cheaper when you get older (really they do, I remember spending £18 on a new album back in the day and now it’s about half that). I’d tell me that when you go to secondary school in just over a year’s time, that yes, you will ditch all your old friends, but that’s it ok and that it’s something you’ll do again (mostly) when you go to university and it doesn’t do you any harm. That’s just how it pans out and circumstance and distance and how you are, but that it’s fine.

I’d say not to be too concerned about the phase where you don’t believe in reality for a few months because of the improbability of it all.

I’d say don’t worry about not studying for your exams, just pay attention in class.

But mostly? I’d tell me to carry on as I am.

Writer’s Block: It’s the end of the world as we know it

If you had the option to learn the exact moment and details of your death, would you choose to know?

Hell no. Mostly because as the moment approached, I’d probably get nervous and on edge and frankly I can do without the stress. I suppose, on some level, it would be useful to know so I could fit everything that I want to do in beforehand… but still.

I think not knowing, and being chilled out about it? Far better.

In The Mood For Love/Scott Pilgrim @ Somerset House

In a giiiiant fit of awful planning, I got tickets for two nights in a row at Somerset House. Next time…I’ll probably not do that and avoid being hideously tired after.

I saw 2046, the sort of sequel to In The Mood For Love, back when it came out at the cinema in a spur of the moment double bill along with Hero. I remember it involved a mad dash from one screen to the next with my friend Corinne. 2046 makes a lot more sense now after seeing In The Mood For Love.

I <3 how you never see Mr Chan’s face and you never see Mr Chow’s wife’s face either. Totally works the whole absent spouse thing. The out of sequence bits worked really well too. Not sure it’s a film you can really talk about, you just experience it.

Scott Pilgrim, the next night, was aces. I <3 Scott Pilgrim…though I don’t really like Scott as a character. He’s kind of weaksauce.  It’s the rest of the characters that really make the film for me.

Annnd before each film, I went to the Behind the Screen talks. Which were pretty good. Although the 2nd was a tad hilarious since I realised I was probably in a room full of people who work on computer games or films and there I am… the legal cashier who’s technically a software engineer. Oops.

Much Ado About Nothing 23/07/11

So as part of my Mum’s ongoing birthday presents (started with a netbook before her birthday and shoes ON her birthday)…and because I wanted to see it anyway, we went to see Much Ado About Nothing. I don’t think I’ve laughed at a play so much in my life before. David Tennant and Catherine Tate, as Benedick and Beatrice, have the best comic timing ever and Don Pedro… Don Pedro was aces. And Claudio! And Don John! And Dogberry.

It was aces all round.

Anyway. So. We’re sitting there. Watching. Laughing. About 20-25 minutes in I feel my Mum look at me and think (yeah, it’s a thing. It’s like when I know she’s giggling like a madwoman during Mass). A moment goes past, where she decides, yeah, she’s going to ask me.

“Is that Doctor Who?”
